In the Grenoble glove fabrique collective (decentralized production), sewing was a crucial point in the finishing and division of labour, on which the quality of the entire production chain ultimately depended. Essentially feminine, this high-quality work, which was done by a large number of female workers of all ages, was either carried out in the workshop or at home, in the urban centre as well as in its urban or rural periphery.

Based on the case of female workers who were working for the Jouvin family, we explore the social forms of this activity by focusing particularly on its spatial organization and its economic productivity, both on an individual or domestic scale and on the community scale of the fabrique collective.
